meet-dean

How long have you been part of the BRAVEday team, and what did you do before?

I've been part of the BRAVEday team pretty much since the beginning. Six months after Dean started the company I left my corporate job (institutional settlements for stockbrokers JB Were) and came to work with Dean.  He did mention something about not quite full time hours but that never happened, it was full time and full on from the beginning.

What do you do to fill in your work day?

My two most important roles are claims and underwriting. I handle the underwriting of all the new applications - essentially this is working with the clients and the insurance companies to gather up all the information so that a policy can be put in place.

The other key part of my role is claims; I look after all of the claims except for medical insurance. This is the most important part of what I do and I find it pretty emotional. it's really hard when people get sick, but it's great to be able to help in some small way. For me, every claim is like dealing with a family member.

Other things I do during the day include HR, accounts, payroll (I've only forgotten this once) and general 'day to day' problem solving and trouble shooting.

What about family?

Dean and I don't have children together, but I do have a gorgeous step-daughter who I love to bits and consider my own. We also have a cat and a dog. Our dog, Marlee, is known as the 'fur child' - she's spoilt rotten.

What is the most challenging thing you have ever done?

Probably going on a student exchange at age 17 to live in a small town in Canada. Prior to that I had never even been on a plane.

Any special achievements/awards you want to brag about?

Not much to brag about, I think that I do a good job managing client's claims and I really love to be able to help.  I'm also a pretty good cook and make a mean 'chicken with green peppercorns and cream sauce' - it's my signature dish.

What do you do for fun?

I love to walk, read, and catch up with friends.  I'm also a bit of a foodie and love travelling.

If you could have a super power what would it be?

Superhuman speed. I've never been known for speed so to be able to move, run, react, think and sense at speeds much faster than a normal human would be awesome.

What is your life "Theme Song" right now?

Special, by Six60.
