Mohan Kannappan was not a typical candidate for a heart attack. Aged 44, and regularly active in sports, Mohan had just returned from a holiday in India when he had a life-changing experience on the badminton court. "After the first 20 minutes, I was feeling very very tired and I thought I had lost my fitness because I hadn't played for a couple of months.
"I was trying to push myself, thinking it was just a fitness problem. I tried to lie down, went to my car, but there was no way to get comfortable, so I went to the hospital, where they said I'd had a massive heart attack and immediately started treating me. Everything happened so fast! The first symptoms were at 8:30 or 9; by 11 I was in the ward."
Earlier, as a new immigrant to New Zealand, Mohan and his wife had met BRAVEday's Dean Young. "I had never had any sort of insurance in NZ, we were new to NZ at that time. He was very very helpful, gave us correct policies and guidance, showed us the correct way, and helped us to choose the insurance policies that would be better for us."
When claim time came, Mohan called on his living assurance policy. "Tania said we'll put a claim in and see what the insurance company says. She was very very helpful. She guided us what we should do, what papers needed to be done, what documents needed to be given. Really helpful all the way."
The living assurance gave Mohan the choice between going back to work sooner or later, or investing the money. "Along with the insurance they also suggested a financial consultant, who helped us plan what to do with our payout," says Mohan.
