Worry less

As women, we worry. We worry about what our kids are doing. We worry about money. We worry about our aging parents…the list goes on. So having to worry about one less thing would be great, right?

Preventative screening is one way to ensure that you remain fit and healthy in the coming years - here are a few of the things that you should keep an eye on:

Melanoma: Given that NZ has one of the highest rates of this nasty cancer, and considering that a whole lot of us spend hours outside, screening for suspicious moles is a no-brainer.  Early detection is always the key so having regular checks will do wonders for your peace of mind.  Next time you are at your GP, ask them to do a skin examination.

Blood Pressure: It's not just our significant others that suffer from high blood pressure.  While the contributing factors may be different, the end result is the same, so ensure that you have your blood pressure checked at least every two years.

Breast Health: BreastScreen Aotearoa offer free mammograms for women aged between 45 to 69.

Cervical Screening: There are many reasons why women delay, or even avoid going for a smear test, but taking time out of your schedule once every three years for this inconvenience is totally worth it.  The National Cervical Screening Programme recommends testing for all females aged 20-70 that have ever been sexually active.

Cholesterol: Once you hit 35, start having (at least) 5 yearly checks for your cholesterol levels.  Obviously, if your diet is high in Trans & Saturated fats, then you may want to have this checked more often.

Oral Health: This is often overlooked when we think about preventative screening, but oral health is just as important.  Six-monthly check-ups are recommended to keep your smile sparkling, regardless of your age.

Keeping on top of your health, along with a good diet and some exercise will ensure that you are in great shape to keep worrying for many years to come….
