Top 10 Beaches in Auckland

Written by Ami Nathan | Nov 18, 2014 11:00:00 AM

Summer is just around the corner (don't let the recent weather fool you) and one of the big advantages of living in New Zealand are the many beautiful beaches that surround us.

We have put together a list of what we think are the top 10 beaches in Auckland (in no particular order).  So make some time to get out in the sun and enjoy… but don't forget to wear your sunscreen.

Piha
Located on the wild west coast, this black sand beach is a popular spot for surfers.  In the summer the beach is patrolled by surf lifesaver's which makes it perfect for families.  There is a café and takeaway close by or you can take a walk up Lion Rock to see the spectacular views.

Onetangi

Located on Waiheke Island, this beach is stunning.  The water is usually quite calm which makes it ideal for swimming.  There are cafes and vineyards close by and the Beachfront Café and Bar is right across the road.

Pakiri

Located an hour north of Auckland, this beach is the perfect place to get away from it all and do nothing.  If you are an active relaxer, there is still plenty to do… you could take a long walk along the beach, go horse riding, windsurfing, kayaking, or fishing.

Mangawhai

Located about 80 minutes north of Auckland, this beach is another popular spot for surfers.  In the summer the beach is patrolled by surf lifesavers and there is an estuary which provides safe swimming, especially for young children.

Bethells

Another beach located on the wild west coast, this black sand beach is also a great place for surfing.  During the summer months the lifeguards are out patrolling the beach which makes it a safe spot for families.

Takapuna

Located on Auckland's North Shore, this beach has a great view of Rangitoto.  It is also close to cafes and shops.  The beach itself is usually pretty calm and you can even climb the rocks and explore the rock pools.

Goat Island

Located about an hour north of Auckland, Goat Island is a marine reserve.  While the beach itself is nothing special, this is an awesome place to go snorkelling.  There is even a glass bottom boat if snorkelling is not your thing.  There are no shops around (the closet being in Leigh) so make sure you pack a picnic.

Wenderholm

Located about 40 minutes north of Auckland, this beach is a great place to spend the day.  The water is usually calm which makes it perfect for families and you get the added bonus of the grassy reserve.  You could also explore the native forest or climb the headland to take in the views of the Hauraki Gulf.

Waiake

Located on Auckland's North Shore, this is a great place to go if you are in the mood to explore.  There is an island close to the shore which you can walk to when the tide is low.

Stanmore Bay

Located on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, this beach is another great option for families.  The water is usually calm which is good for swimming and there is a cool playground for the kids.  The sport fields are close by if you want to play a game of touch.

Do you have any others that you think should be added to our list?
