TEDx has been to town

Last week Auckland's Aotea Centre was the venue for the TEDx event. What is TEDx you ask? In a nutshell it's an event presented by organisations, communities and individuals to help like-minded individuals (who want to learn) learn from others experience.

I didn't make it to the actual TEDx event but I was fortunate enough to attend the 'warm up' event - Telecom TEDx on Wednesday the 31st.  It was two hours well spent.

This subject for this event was 'data' - its evolution and how having an insight into this evolution, and by continuing to embrace change we (New Zealander's) can use data to help us grow our business.

I was reading through my notes today and thought I would share my top takeaways from each presenter.

Dr Andreas Weingend, who is a Former Chief Scientist at Amazon.com

This is a man who loves data but shared that one piece of data he wouldn't part with was the results of a saliva test he underwent… interestingly he was concerned that the results might have an impact on his insurance in some way - as you can imagine that got my attention…

Take outs
Consider the 4 C's when you are encouraging customers to engage with you:

  • Content
  • Context
  • Connection
  • Conversation

Constraints

Is your system optimised around constraints of the past?  (I suspect that I'm not the only person who is very concerned with the answer to this one).

Connect - 'we commerce'

Focus on the connections between people

Imagine

If you had all the data in the world what would you do to delight your customers?

Pete Russell, who is the founder of a local produce home delivery company, Ooooby

Ooooby seems like a fabulous idea - buying fresh, local produce as and when you need it from people who are growing it close by - Ooooby is short for:  out of our own back yard

Take outs:

  • Get people to talk about you
  • Some of the best ideas are based on simple common sense
  • Understanding your data is critical to understanding your business

….I've signed up to Ooooby for us at home as well as adding our weekly office fruit order - our first delivery will arrive next week…
