Summer is just around the corner

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, with 2,324 new registrations in 2012 alone. It is important to be aware that if detected in the early stages, most melanomas are curable.

With this in mind, it is recommended that you have annual mole checks… especially if you have fair skin as your risk of developing skin cancer is higher.

In some cases your private medical insurance may cover the cost of having a mole map, if your policy includes a screening benefit (all policies are different so you will need to check your specific policy wordings).  Even if your medical insurance doesn't cover the cost of this, a full body examination only costs around $250… that's a small price to pay for your health.

Did you know?

Trauma covers you if you are diagnosed with life threatening cancer, but did you know that even if you are diagnosed with a lower grade skin cancer you may still be able to claim under your Trauma benefit, even if you just entitled to a partial pay out.  It is always worth checking with your adviser.

Important 'Sun Smart' Tips…

  • Slip (into a long-sleeved shirt), Slop (on plenty of sunscreen), Slap (on a hat with a wide-brim), Seek (some shade) and Warp (on a pair of close-fitting sunglasses).
  • Apply sunscreen even on a cloudy day
  • Check your sunscreen to make sure it has not expired.
  • Apply your sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go outside and reapply every two hours, or after swimming
  • Don't forget to apply sunscreen to your face, hands, neck and ears.
