Man up!

It wasn't until I started thinking about writing this blog that I realised how many blokes I personally know that have been affected by prostate cancer. I initially thought of a couple, and then the tally kept rising.

The thing is, given the nature of the disease, there are probably more that have not divulged their diagnosis.  Here in NZ, prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men, with around 3,000 diagnoses a year leading to approximately 600 deaths.

While it is not known what causes prostate cancer, regular screening is the key to catching it early, which improves the prognosis.

(Ladies - this is where you look away).

So, gents … when you are next having your WOF at the GP, ask about having your prostate checked.  The indignity of having a prostate exam will be over and forgotten before you leave the GP clinic, but the peace of mind will last a lifetime.

If you just can't face the thought of the physical exam, there is another option for keeping on top of your prostate health - PSA tests.  This simple blood test monitors the Prostate Specific Antigen (a protein in your blood stream), and when taken on a regular basis (annually), can be an early indicator if your levels are on the rise.

The message is pretty clear - it's time to man up and start looking after your own health and well-being!
