Little changes that help you save

Over the weekend I was talking to my Aunty and we were discussing the price of power and how much this costs us per month. We both have similar households, a couple with no children. The only real difference being that my husband and I have a slightly larger home.

She asked me how much we pay per month and when I told her (around $90 - $100 per month) she looked taken aback.  I thought we must be paying way too much, but actually she was surprised by how low our bills were.

With winter well and truly here, I thought it was a good time for a reminder on ways to save power, and have come up with the following tips:

  1. Use energy-saving light bulbs wherever you can; this can save you up $20 per year, per light bulb.  Also, remember to turn the lights off when you leave the room.
  2. Invest in full length thermal lined curtains that cover your entire window and close the curtains as soon as the sun starts to go down.  This will help to keep the heat inside and stop it from escaping.
  3. Use cold water when washing your clothes.  This can save you up to 90% when compared to a hot/warm wash.
  4. If you have a second fridge, or a beer fridge, turn it off when you are not using it.
  5. Try to dry your clothes outside rather than using a dryer.  If possible set up a washing line in your carport or under cover somewhere so when it rains, your clothes will stay dry.

Do you have any power saving tips that you think should be added to this list?

Another way to save money on your power bill is to make sure that you are on the best plan for your situation.  You can go to the What's My Number website to compare the plans available to you.
