Life Lessons from a Hindu Monk

Written by Dean Young | Nov 20, 2012 11:00:00 AM

Last week Tania and I attended an all day workshop with ex-Hindu monk Dandapani.

I had heard a lot about this guy from my friends and peers in the Entrepreneurs Organisation so Tania and I had high expectations leading into the day . . .  time to refocus on balancing our life.

What we came away with were numerous tools and experiences shared by Dandapani to help us on our way.  Here are a couple of my takeaways from the day:

1. Living a Balanced Life

The art of balancing life is the art of managing your energy.  A balanced life is achieved when you are able to consciously direct awareness and energy in a proportionate way to all the people and things in our life that truly matter to us.

"Constantly manage energy into the things and people that really matter"

"Is what I'm doing now worth my energy?"

2. Becoming Affectionately Detached

We all have people in our lives that do not uplift us - in fact; a few of them suck the life out of us.  So, how should we deal with that?  Make a list of all the people and things in your life that do not uplift you.  Over the course of the following months, slowly work to withdraw your energy from them.  As you do this, remain affectionately detached towards them.

"Everything in life is transient - things come and go"

"Evaluate people, but don't judge"

"Share with the people that truly matter - otherwise have a set of responses that don't engage conversation"

"Don't ask 'how are you?' Do you really want to know??"

"You just need a few good people in your life"

"Zero tolerance for 'Energy Vampires' that drain your energy"

"My time and my energy is limited"

Here are just a few more great nuggets I took down that I think are worth sharing:

"Where awareness goes - energy flows"

"Just be who you are"

"The busier you are, the more holidays you need"

"Not everything has to be dealt with this very moment"

"Do it once, do it right"
