Is insurance for me?

Written by Jess Thorne | Sep 10, 2013 12:00:00 PM

Insuring my life at 18 was not something I was expecting to do; let alone being able to make an independent or fully informed decision.

At that stage of my life I did not see the necessity of life insurance, as I had barely anything to my name.  The thing is, once something is pushed on you time and time again, and you know no better, you tend to just agree.  Which is what I did - applying for life insurance through my bank. Luckily enough, after a talk with my Mum I brought this process to a halt.

"We will do what's best for our clients" is one of BRAVEday's core values - I feel this should be standard for anyone giving insurance advice.  Neglecting to carry out this fundamental value is probably why, at times, the insurance industry can have a bad reputation.  "Doing what is best for the client" was certainly not something I experienced in my first insurance encounter with my bank. Everyone's needs are different, people are at different stages of their lives and their cover should reflect this."

The aim with insurance should be to sustain your livelihood in case something happens to you; a key piece of knowledge I will take away from my time at BRAVEday.

Now that I know there is more to insurance than medical and life insurance, I will be seeking advice on what is right for me.  Moving into the next phase of my life, starting my career and purchasing a house, will all impact on what insurance is necessary for me.
