Being a Mum is arguably one of the most important jobs in the world, and being fit and healthy helps you in giving your job your best. Too often, mums have a bad habit of putting their needs on the back burner. We need to remember that being healthy and happy, makes us far more productive, so I have put together a list of some practical tips on how you can achieve this.

Exercise

Regular exercise is important, yet one of the largest hurdles for a busy mum is finding the time to exercise. A must for anyone who is short on time is setting small achievable, specific goals as well as looking for different ways that exercise can fit into your day. Something like walking for a half an hour 4 times a week, perhaps with a neighbour or friend can be a good start and you can't underestimate the power of an exercise buddy to keep you motivated. Another tip for the multi- tasking mum, try taking a quick power walk around the block while waiting for that martial arts / gymnastics class to finish instead of sitting and watching every session.

Remember that before children your workout time may have been an hour at the gym. But with naptime, play time and mealtimes your fitness may change to 10 minute workouts here and there, long walks with the kids, or pram runs in the parks. Grab the opportunity while you can. "Play" During Family time

Family time is a great time to work exercise into your busy schedule. Bike riding, skipping, or just kicking a ball are great ways to burn calories and have fun. Plus the added bonus is teaching your children the importance of an active lifestyle.

Make yourself a priority

Be it relaxing, eating, exercising or socialising, it is important to make time for you. Only when you are are physically and mentally healthy can you give your best to your family.

De-Stress

Whenever you feel like your blood pressure is rising, breathe, refocus and regroup. Do what you can and let the rest of it go. Enlist the help of your husband, extended family or friends if you need to. Remember, there is no shame in asking for help.

Research shows that mothers who work outside the home are feeling overwhelmed, under-supported and terrified of making the wrong choices. With over 900,000 working mums in this country, it appears that life is proving to be hard work. A good article offering tips for all us Mums is Stress Solutions for Mums.

Most importantly, remember that life can at times seem overwhelming, and everyone wants to throw in the towel at some time. But I realize when I'm feeling stressed and incapable, it's usually because I've neglected myself and I'm drained. So in an effort to get back on track hopefully some of the tips above will help you through those dark mummy times. If not, there is always chocolate and wine.
