Do it yourself flower class

Written by Guest Blogger - Annie Cody | Feb 20, 2014 11:00:00 AM

I hold flower classes at my country home and garden. They are fun and relaxed where you can learn more tricks of the trade, watch me demonstrate a few ideas and then you can make something for yourself and take it home with you.

Prices are $50 per person - please call for the latest Flower School Schedule.

Here's a taste of what you can learn....

Firstly and most importantly make sure your flowers are fresh, if not all your hard work will be for nothing and your arrangement will only last a couple of days.  Test the end of the stems - if they are soft or smelly your flowers have been around too long already!

Make sure your vase is really clean.  When you clean it use hot water and a drop of bleach will help remove any bacteria that may be lurking.

Secondly always remove the foliage from the lower part of the stem that will be under the water in your vase.  This will help to keep the water fresh and lengthen the life of your flowers.

Finally make sure you cut your flowers stems on an angle, this enables the flowers to take up more water and last longer.

This arrangement is stunning and meant for a large area.  The vase is tall so you will need long stemmed flowers for it.  If you cannot get lillies try hydrangeas and stock could always replace the delphiniums.

What you will need

1 x large cylinder vase (available through Honeysuckle)
3 x flax leaves
2 x bunches of magnolia leaves
2 x bunches of oriental lilies
1 x bunch of delphiniums

Firstly fill your vase with water.  Then wrap each of the flax leaves around your hand one at a time, place your hand into the vase and let them unwrap and fill the space one on top of the other.

Then grid the top of the vase using sellotape, this helps keep the flowers in place.

Place all the magnolia leaves around the rim of the vase and one or two in the middle, turning the vase around as you go.

Then place the lilies around the rim of the vase.  Once again turning the vase as you go to make sure you get an even spread of flowers.

Once they are place you can put the Delphiniums in grouping them in the centre.  Do not push them all the way in - let the grid and all the other flowers hold them up higher.
