Cancer at a glance

Most of you probably know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer at some time in their life.Below are some statistics that you may find interesting:

  • In 2008, 20,317 cancers were registered in New Zealand, an increase of 22% since 1998
  • Cancer was the leading cause of death for both males and females in New Zealand in 2008, accounting for 29% of all deaths.
  • In 2008, 8,566 people had cancer recorded as their underlying cause of death; of these, 53% were male.  Between 1998 and 2008, the number of deaths from cancer increased by 13%.
