8 free things to do in Auckland

Forget the housework, gardens and maintenance this weekend. . . .we have an awesome backyard in Auckland, so go and do some exploring!

Takapuna/Milford Beach
Walk the length of Takapuna Beach, and keep going!  There is a hidden beach between Takapuna & Milford (not so many nude sunbathers this time of year) that you don't realise is there when you are driving along Hurstmere Road.

Markets
Soak in the atmosphere at one of Auckland's local markets - a few of the bigger ones are Otara, Avondale and Takapuna.

Auckland Museum, Domain and Winter Gardens.
Entry to the museum is a suggested donation - they have just made it look like you have to pay.  To avoid the hassle, enter from the cafĂ© entrance at the back!

Wander from the Museum through the Domain, to the Winter Gardens.  Now is the perfect time to go through the two great big glass houses full of beautiful plants and flowers.

Tamaki Drive
Catch a bus from the city to Mission Bay, and walk back.  Heaps to see, a lovely gentle stroll and you won't have to go to the gym that day!

Ponsonby
Window shopping rarely ends up being free, but Ponsonby has a great vibe, and some great shops to wander in and out of.  Go around lunch time and you are spoilt for choice with a huge range of eateries all in walking distance.

Mt Eden or One Tree Hill
There is only so much looking at the Auckland view you can do, so pick one and drive up for amazing panoramic views of the city.  Just sit and soak it all in.

Devonport
It is so much more than a quaint little seaside village.  Grab a torch and wander through to tunnels at North Head - and again, enjoy the amazing views.

Piha or Muriwai Beach
In my opinion, winter is the best time of year to visit wild West Coast beaches.  The surf is pounding, and the wind blows away any worries.  At Muriwai, the gannets are just beginning to nest in August, it's well worth a look.
