Why do men have such a big problem with going to the doctor?

Written by BRAVEday team | Sep 22, 2015 12:00:00 PM

Speak to any female you know and they will be able to tell you that the men in their lives have a real problem getting themselves to the doctor. Whether they are hobbling about in agony or dying of man-flu, reasons can range from "They don't know anything" to "What if I'm actually dying" or even "What if they ask me to do something I don't want to? .

Sadly, statistics state the following true facts about men: (source)

  • They drink more than women.
  • They smoke more than women.
  • They don't live as long as women.
  • They engage in more high risk activities than women

So why are men so bad and getting themselves off to the GP? Culture dictates that men have been taught that they just need to "man up" and get on with it from an early age. They do not seem to have the long term relationship that women tend to develop with their GP's from an early age due to regular visits.

There are loads of article's out there that outline why men find it so hard to go to the GP. Below are the top four reasons that I have found: (source)

I'm Fine

Men tend to only want to go to the doctor if they are "extremely sick". So unless there's a problem, men aren't going to the doctor for prevention.

I'll tough it out

Men have been taught not to complain about their health from an early age. It is not masculine. Whilst some illness and injury can be shaken off there are some examples where your symptoms will only get worse if you don't receive proper treatment.

Lack of Female Encouragement

Ok ladies. The nagging is a good thing. If you don't have a wife, mother or significant other nagging you, you're less likely to go. Apparently women go the Doctors four times more frequently than men. Maybe that's why women live longer than men.

I don't have time

Of course you don't have time. There are fish to be caught, 18 holes of golf to be played and work is super busy. We are all busy, but making time to see the doctor once a year isn't a biggie. Remember, even the busiest people get sick.

Going to the GP is just like having your warrant of fitness and when it comes down to it there are no good reasons not to see your doctor only excuses. So come on Guys, schedule an appointment for an annual check-up today.
