Summer is upon us, and the holiday season is just around the corner. It's the wonderful time of year where we get a breather from work to hit the beaches, take the boat out fishing, or head away for a well-deserved break.
It's also the time of year that we get an influx of claims - for losses that can completely ruin the festive season for our clients. Here are a few tips to try and help you avoid something happening to your property over the holiday period.
If you're heading away, think about doing the following:
Your house:
- Shut your water off at the mains.
- Turn your electrical appliances (TV, microwave, stereo etc.) off at the wall before you leave.
- Set a few lights and/or electrical appliances on a timer to give the impression that someone is still home. If possible, set them to turn on/off at a different time each day.
- Ask a neighbour or a friend to clear your mailbox and open/close your curtains - this is big giveaway to would-be thieves.
- Before you leave make sure all your windows are shut and secured and the doors are locked.
Your car:
- Check your tire pressure and tread
- Check your oil and water
- Top up the fluid in the window washer
- Check you spare tire and jack and make sure they are in good working order
- Make sure your warrant and registration are up to date
- Pack a few games or colouring books in the car for the kids
The biggest tip of all:
Take your time wherever you are going, drive safely and be courteous on the roads. Remember, it takes 4 muscles to smile and 20 to frown!
Happy Holidays!!
