I often get asked 'Why do I need medical insurance?'. This is a very easy question to answer;
Private medical insurance ensures access to non-urgent medical care, quickly; without having to sit on the public waiting list. The sooner you receive medical care, the sooner you can get back to 'normal' - and back to work.
Last week we helped one of our clients with a pre-approval. It was a great example of how medical insurance can make a HUGE difference. Our client had just been diagnosed with breast cancer after a screening mammogram detected a small lump.
The good news
The lump was detected early and with surgery and radiotherapy the recovery chances are excellent.
The bad news
A three month wait in the public health system to see a specialist (before any treatment or surgery could be arranged).
The good news is totally offset by the bad in this scenario.
Fortunately, our client has private medical insurance and rang us as soon she was advised of the three month waiting list.
It was awesome to be able to help, straight away. I advised her to book a private specialist appointment as soon as possible, and that we would ensure she had pre-approval from her insurer before the appointment.
Just two days later our client was seeing a private specialist who will manage her surgery and treatment going forward - no waiting!
This is a clear example of the power of private medical insurance. An initial consultation, a follow up consultation and surgery booked in - all within three weeks of the diagnosis.
Medical insurance - YES, you need it!
