There is no denying that we now live in a technological age - it's common to see a group of teens sitting in a group with their eyes glued to a screen engaging in a virtual world, while the real world passes them by.
Our new sedentary lifestyle has been a contributing factor to an increase in obesity rates - two thirds of our population is overweight or obese - pretty scary statistics.
There is only one way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and it's pretty simple really - eat healthily and exercise regularly. There is no magic formula, and there is no quick fix, however there is a whole raft of useful tools to help you on your way…making the most of the technology that got us into this mess in the first place. We all know what we should be doing, sometimes it's just a case of being made accountable, or having a push in the right direction - check out these apps to get you started.
As the name suggests, this app gets you off the couch, and running 5kms a day in around 8 weeks. It's a great way to get you started - it begins with a gentle warm up, has you running and walking for set intervals that gradually get you jogging like a pro.
More than just a calorie counter - MyNetDiary helps you to track what you are eating, calories burned through exercise, your water intake and measurements.
This is more for the ladies…. Much like MyNetDiary, this app tracks your food intake, calories burned etc, but it has some pretty unique features. This free app (our favourite price) is pretty much the whole package - it encourages you to set realistic goals and gives you daily reminders on tasks that help you reach those goals. It also has a "Panic Button" (in the upgraded $1.29 version) for when you are craving something you know you shouldn't be eating!
Is will-power not your thing? Try this last app for some subliminal suggestion…
Tap in to your subconscious mind … if nothing else, it will give you 40 minutes of relaxation time.
Are you using an app in your day to day life?
